Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation was the standout film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Fox Searchlight has just released the first trailer for this highly-anticipated (and certain to be much-celebrated) film, which released nation-wide on October 7th. WIT PR is both honored and excited to be handling faith and social justice outreach for the film, whose story sheds light on American history and makes intelligent contributions to ongoing conversations around race, religion, and justice. View the trailer and read more about the film below.
Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities–against himself and his fellow slaves–Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
